What Is A Maenad? Dionysian Paths and HBO’s ‘True Blood’

What Is A Maenad?

MaenadMaenads are female mythological beings who worship the Greek god Dionysus (or Bacchus in the Roman pantheon). Dionysus and his maenad followers remain popular cultural and spiritual reference points because they are associated with partying and raucous behavior. Many have recently become curious about maenads due to HBO’s True Blood series, which outed supporting character Maryann as a maenad.

Maenads are connected to drinking, dancing, and overall intoxication. They are female figures and appear as a maternal, protective figure to mortals.

Maenads are identified by the excellent parties and followers that surround them as well as a thrysus (vine and leaf-wrapped stick). Greco-Roman myths and legends typically described maenads as wearing domestic or exotic animal skins.

In a modern context, they seem to represent a feminine struggle–a desire to be protective and maternal, but sometimes causing conflict due to a possessive, aggressive, vengeful nature.

Modern Connections

Interestingly, Dionysus was one ancient god who died and experienced resurrection. While there don’t seem to be too many (open) followers of Dionysus in modern times, the obvious Jesus/Dionysus connection (because of resurrection) is likely a point of reflection for many who study Greek and Roman mythology.

Furthermore, most women (and people in general) who wish to lead a party-oriented lifestyle don’t necessarily have to declare themselves part of Dionysus’ following to frequently imbibe or have a problem with excess.
