Paulo Coelho’s Brida: Story of a Witch
As you may have read on here before, I am a big fan of author Paulo Coelho. I particularly enjoy his stories because he reflects upon gender and spirituality in a way that really makes sense to me. Coelho also takes a very universalist approach, which I find appealing; I believe he has the potential to reach a wide audience (and has done so).
When I found out about Coelho’s recent publication, I felt a warm light inside. He wrote Brida, the tale of an Irish witch and her spiritual journey. I certainly related to Brida’s spiritual searching and contemplation of fulfillment in love, life, and in her studies and career.
The mystical qualities of the Irish landscape and the contrast of Dublin and the country certainly added to my affinity for this book.
I most enjoyed the very beginning and the fact that Brida’s enlightenment and journey is in no way holier-than-thou or foreign to the reader. Furthermore, Wicca (Brida’s mentor and spiritual guide) references many different paths and religions as a means of relating to Brida and her environment.
Have you read this book? What do you think of it?
A few years ago Coelho was all the rage; I picked up the book du jour by him… and found it irritating (I can’t even remember the title!). I felt that for those who hadn’t gotten any enlightenment, who were utterly unaware of their Self, perhaps the book would do them good, but I was not at that stage anymore, and didn’t need such… coddling?
I’ll give him another try with this book, tho, after reading your review
Hopefully I won’t be impatient and irritated as he paints the spiritual journey of an Irish witch
I will have to check out his books. Thanks for the info. www.hauntedliving.today.com
