Movies: The Craft
Movies like The Craft are often ‘blamed’ for the creation of fluffy bunnies. The film, which was originally billed as “Carrie meets Clueless,” follows the story of Sarah Bailey, a transpl
ant to Los Angeles who formerly attempted to kill herself by slitting her wrists. She meets up with three outcasts at her new (Catholic) school. Sarah’s coming represents the fourth of the cardinal directions, and the other young women welcome her into the group.
Together, these young women learn about and use witchcraft to do harm to others–only after that do they learn first-hand about the three-fold rule (oops). While The Craft can be viewed as a cautionary tale, some tend to see that it is about witchcraft and automatically assume that it is evil, etc., rather than taking it as a work of fiction.
From the pagan angle, many dislike The Craft because they feel it draws in the wrong type of new crowd to their particular paths.
I take it as a work of fiction. I think the movie is entertaining, and also explores the concepts of self-esteem and female empowerment relevant to women of all spiritualities. The movie also examines how people treat one another, and notes that the Harm None/Golden Rule concept is essential to various religions and spiritualities.
What do you think?

It’s one of the things that I was deeply ashamed about for years but ‘The Craft’ was my first real introduction into paganism. Luckily I was one of the ones who actually did research after seeing this movie and avoided the ‘fluff bunny’ path.
To this day I cringe a little when I think about all the people I met over the years who didn’t bother to do proper research and decided to take the ‘fluff bunny’ route though.
I admit that this movie is a bit of a guilty pleasure
I found “The Craft” after paganism. The movie kind of freaked me out the first time I saw it, but now I also find it to be a guilty pleasure!
