Pagan Crossover Crowds
We’ve all seen examples of crossover fandoms. For example, sometimes people who like Star Trek like Firefly. They are both sci-fi, the both take place in space, so it makes sense. As a geek, I can’t help but notice how many pagans I tend to encounter in my other areas of interest. Most people know what paganism and neo-paganism are if they do not know a pagan in person, but long before I chose to label myself spiritually this way, I found myself connected to pagans via my various interests.
I’ve found a healthy amount of pagans in the geek crowd in general, particularly females; I’ve found that most geeks are accepting or not
surprised to find technopagans among their ranks specifically. Also, SCAdians (those who participate in the Society for Creative Anachronism), LARPers, historical reenactors, and renaissance faire enthusiasts frequently encounter and include those practicing nontraditional spiritualities.
I’ve found a few main ties between my spirituality and my inherently geeky interests. For one, the clothing–hippie clothing, Celtic-inspired clothing, and Indian clothing are all accepted in the various fandoms and spiritualities I’m discussing here, even if only in a historical sense. A sense of heritage and a conscious human quest for one’s place in the world is also taken rather seriously by people all over the world in a spiritual sense, but certain fandoms like the aforementioned Trek also seek to explore this topic through various media and discussion.
While I don’t think it’s necessarily odd to find crossover between fandoms, it is interesting that pagans seem to gravitate towards certain interest in large groups.
Have you encuontered this before? Do you think it is due to demographic, spiritual questing, or something else?

Although not really related to paganism, I do notice a general philosophical, political and religious trend among Next Generation Star Trek fans. Gene Roddenberry was a noted secular humanist, and his beliefs were quite evident in TNG. I am honestly surprised when, on those rare occasions, I run into a hard core Christian or conservative who is also a TNG fan.
Thanks for your comment. I definitely feel like my spiritual search was actually assisted by my interests and upbringing rather than the other way around, and Star Trek was definitely something that drew me in at a young age.
Makes sense to me!
Yeah you never know which super geek may be a Jedi. Shae Jedi can’t marry as I find them quite lovely to drool over!
